Project Management Standards: IPMA

Project management has no single definition on what it is and how it is to be done. Throughout the world there are several standards and concepts and corporates as well as customers need some baselines when talking about project management and one of these is the international project management association (IPMA). It has spread from Europe to Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and North and South America. Through IPMA, project management practitioners from all cultures and all parts of the world can network, share ideas, and move our practice and our stakeholders forward through effective collaboration and cooperation.

Standard:

IPMA has defined a worldwide standard for competences in the areas of Project-, Program- and Portfolio Management. For Individuals, there is the Individual Competence Baseline®, ICB version 4; for projects the Project Excellence Baseline®; and for organizations, the IPMA Organizational Competence Baseline® Based on the ICB4, we have also defined a competence baseline for coaches, trainers and consultants in the field of projects, programs and portfolios.

Certifications:

Organizations:

IPMA offers an international, competence-based, certification scheme. In your own country, in your own language, at your own competence level. Worldwide, IPMA certification of organisations is based on the global competence standard, IPMA OCB. This standard is developed by IPMA and describes the competences an organization that carries out projects, programs and portfolios should possess.

Individual:

Most commonly known is the individual certification. IPMA offers an international, competency-based, four level certification (4-L-C) scheme. In your own country, in your own language, at your own competence Level = International Competence Baseline® (ICB)

Worldwide, the IPMA certification is based on the global competence standard, ICB. This standard is defined by the IPMA and describes the competences that project, program and portfolio managers should possess. Currently, IPMA transitioning from ICB version 3 to ICB version 4. You can contact your local organization to get more details on the transitioning path. By the end of 2019, all certifications will be based upon ICB version 4 – worldwide.

Levels of certification

What is the value of the certificate?

Worldwide, IPMA provides the only certification program based on competences. IPMA level D is IPMA’s starting level, aimed at starting professionals. Level C is aimed at people who have 3-5 years of working experience and is comparable in level to most internationally used certification schemes. Levels B and level A are the levels for the very experienced and competent project-, program- and portfolio managers. When you reach these levels, you have proven to be an all-round, experienced professional, capable of running complex initiatives.

A certificate needs to be updated on a regular basis. After a specific period of time, a certificate is withdrawn unless a person undergoes the re-certification process.
